2022 Saw A Rise In Positive Drug Tests Amongst Truck Drivers

In 2022 we saw another increase in failed drug tests amongst truck drivers by 18% increase. Then increase was in both failed drug tests and also that refused to take a drug tests. As a licensed commercial truck driver, random drug test through the Department of Transportation alcohol and drug screening,

A majority of the increase in positive test was due to a increase in marijuana and marijuana like substances. These results were posted last week through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Adminstration .

So what happens if you fail a drug or alcohol test in a random? At this moment you are probably realizing your mistake, and wondering if you can still have a career in the trucking industry. Maybe you realize you need help, and this a the wake up call that you needed, Or maybe you are looking towards the future and wondering how you can support yourself and your family?

So What Constitutes A Positive Tests?

  • Failure to show up to take your random test
  • Failure to stay at the facility to complete your test
  • Failure to provide a urine sample
  • Failure to allow staff to observe you creating your urine sample, or tampering with your urine sample.
  • Failure to listen and follow the directions of the staff such as not washing your hands, or signing the paperwork, or refusing to empty your pockets.
  • Being confrontational with the staff.

What Happens If I Fail My Drug or Alcohol Tests?

First thing is your employer will pull you off the road. If you violate DOT drug and alcohol regulations, you’re unable to perform DOT safety-sensitive duties until you go through a SAP program. After you are taken off the road, your employer should provide you with a list of qualified Substance Abuse Professionals in your area to contact. The DOT will also assign you with a SAP Professional to evaluate you. A SAP Professional are specially licensed to evaluate drivers whom have violated a DOT drug or alcohol test.

The SAP Professional will then decide what course of education and or treatment you will need. These an include but not limited to future testing, evaluation, education, treatment and after care programs. This is the end of your companies involvement with you and your SAP professional.

Unless you SAP Professional needs to speak to them to improve your treatment. You company will not pay or help you with the SAP program. This is strictly up to you the driver and your SAP Professional. You are not FORCED to attend the SAP program. However if you choose to refuse this, you will NEVER work in the trucking industry again. Please also be aware even if you complete the SAP program you may have a hard time finding employment.

Most companies have a zero tolerance for failed tests, and the chance of relapse is so high. Not to mention often times insurance companies will not want to insure you to drive a Commercial Motor Vehicle
